The food you take while on medication is a key thing to be considered. For the effectiveness of the medicine or drug in the body.
Food being a factor that affects the absorption rate of the drugs.Pharmacists are advised to instruct their patients or consultants,on their diet during medication.Patients too have a responsibility to enquire from the pharmacist if necessary.
This effect is mainly encountered in the oral medication;because in oral medication the drug must be absorbed through the Gastro – intestinal tract(GIT), before it enters the blood stream and sent to the target site.
Stomach is a major site for absorption of weak organic acids and also highly oxidised substances are less absorbed here.It is also found along the GIT ,where the orally administered drugs or antibiotics passes before being absorbed in the respective sites/by the body.
The presence of the food in the stomach influences the absorption rate of the drugs;due to the low pH (relative acidity) in the stomach, which causes certain compounds to be chemically decomposed.
This is the reason why some drugs are administered in gelatine capsules or coated tablets.Inorder to reach the targetted sites .

Milk is one type of food commonly advised by doctors not to be used while taking medicine. The reason is that most antibiotic drugs contains tetracycline that react with the milk.Hence the antibiotics are bound by calcium contained in the milk preventing the drug from reaching the targetted site.

Therefore you need to check your diet while on medication.
